Homes in Hill City, SD

Although gold and tin mining brought explorers to Hill City at the turn of the 19th century, close proximity to Mount Rushmore and the timber industry has sustained Hill City since the 1940’s. Most recently, Hill City has a few claims to fame. One is the family owned and operated Alpine Inn Restaurant, located in the original Harney Peak Hotel. With only one choice on the dinner menu (small or large filet mignon), people line up for hours to enjoy the succulent fare, homemade desserts, and old world charm. A nearly complete skeleton of a tyrannosaurus Rex fossil, named Sue, brought notoriety to the area in the 1990’s when a dispute with the federal government put Hill City on the map over rightful ownership of the skeleton (which eventually went to the land owner). Reenactments of Old West Shootouts occur quite frequently on Main Street during the height of tourist season.
